The Western Institute for Social Research (WISR) offers individualized BA, MA and PhD degree programs for working adults. Students design their learning activities with faculty assistance pursuing readings, practical projects, action-oriented research, meaningful writing in their own voice, and building bridges to their desired (and sometimes quite distinctive) career paths. A few WISR students study from great distances and confer frequently with faculty by phone between occasional visits.

WISR is a multiethnic institution, and students are encouraged to consider issues of community improvement, social change, multiculturality and organizational innovation in their studies. Tuition is $500/month. WISR was founded in 1975 and is approved by the State of California Bureau of Private Postsecondary and Vocational Education.

WISR offers BA and MA programs in Psychology, Social Sciences and Human Services and Community Development. The MA program in Psychology includes an option that meets the State's academic requirements for the Marriage and Family Therapy (MFT) License. WISR also offers an MA in Education and an interdisciplinary PhD in Higher Education and Social Change. WISR is also introducing an option within its existing degree programs that enable a few students to pursue learning modules and learning projects in Small Business Development and Guerilla Marketing.
