Ohlone Park Mural

Text of the Mural's plaque:
The Ohlone Journey is a mural by California Indian artist Jean LaMarr. Its four panels celebrate the lives and culture of the indigenous people of the Bay Area. On the panel facing east, "Coyote Creation Story" shows the abundance of life that once thrived in this region. The north panel depicts the dance with which the Ohlone welcomed the "European Entry Into the Bay Area." The westward-facing panel, "Modern Life Transitions," honors individuals who lived in the twentieth century. "The Strong Walk Back to the Future," on the south face, represents the Ohlones' determination to thrive without sacrificing their traditions or cultural identity.

The mural was commissioned by Friends of Ohlone Park and funded by grants from the City of Berkeley's Civic Arts Commission, Department of Public Works and City Council, the Alameda Civic Arts Council, and the LEF Foundation. Spencer LaMarr, Ella LaMarr, and Kyle Curtis assisted the artist.
