Since the 1950's, merchants in the Sacramento Street commercial corridor have been offering an array of unique goods designed to match the tastes of their local neighborhood. These offerings range from savory Caribbean cuisine and fresh produce to gospel records and distinctive healthcare. The history of the neighborhood echoes the spirit of William Byron Rumford, a former business owner in South Berkeley who became the first African American to serve in legislature. His passion for community development ushered in developments in fair housing and employment for the residents of South Berkeley. Following the zeal of Rumford, the South Berkeley Merchants Association (SBMA), a 501(c)3 non-profit corporation established in 1998, works to promote and enhance the local community of South Berkeley. The organization is dedicated to ensuring that the commercial properties on Sacramento Street from the Oakland border to Oregon Street have the resources for successful improvement and sustainability. The association actively participates in neighborhood clean-up activities and, façade improvements as well as community garden programs.
