Some of our pages appear in Adobe
Acrobat format. This allows you to print out the pages exactly
as the author wrote them, regardless of your computer or printer. If you
don’t have Acrobat Reader, it is a free plug-in for your web browser. Get
it at http://www.adobe.com/products/acrobat/alternate.html#405.
This is the only plug-in you’ll need on our site.
My “BACK” button
doesn’t work!
When you click on a store’s external
web site, your web browser will open a new “window.” You
will not be able to use the “Back” key to get back to ShopInBerkeley. To
get back to our site, close the new window, or use “Alt-Tab” in Windows
or newer Macs to switch back to the ShopInBerkeley window.
Printing a business’
page:
Click anywhere in the business’ frame
Netscape Navigator/Communicator:
Select “Print” to print that framel;
or to save printing time and paper, choose File, Print Preview
to see if you want to print all the pages--often a web page may print as
several pages with just an unwanted footer on the last page.
Internet Explorer:
If you choose the “Print” button, you will print the “active” frame. Click
in the business’ frame to make it active, then hit the print button.
If you want to print all frames, choose File, Print... (or
Ctrl+P), then you can choose to print one or both frames.
If you can’t
find the business you’re looking for:
go to the Alphabetical Index page
click the mouse on the red “Alphabetical Directory” box
use your browser’s Find command by typing “Ctrl+f” in Windows or “Command+f”
(also called “Apple+f”) on a Mac. (Hint: use just part of the name in case
you don’t have the whole name exactly right.)
If you still can’t find the business, we may not have them listed. Let
the store know about us, and encourage them to join. If you’d like to help
them, click on the “Join” link, print out the application page, and pass
it off to the owner/manager.
Bookmarking
(Netscape) and Favorites (Explorer) work different in Frames web sites.
Netscape Communicator/Navigator:
If you Bookmark a page in Netscape, it only bookmarks the “Home” frame,
that is the ShopInBerkeley home page. To Bookmark a business’ home page,
do the following:
Anywhere in the frame you want to Bookmark, click and hold the right mouse
button (in Windows) or the single mouse button (on a Mac) until you see
a menu appear.
Select “Add Bookmark.”
You now have Bookmarked that business’ page.
When you return to that Bookmark, the page will open in a window without
the ShopInBerkeley title frame. Click the “Return” link to return to the
ShopInBerkeley home page.
Microsoft Internet Explorer:
When you click on “Favorites, Add to Favorites...” you will be prompted
to enter a name. Type in the name of the business, then click the OK button.
Surfing with
Images turned off in Netscape Navigator
To save download time on web sites, you can surf with images turned off
in Netscape (found under “Edit, Preferences, Advanced, Automatically load
images”). When surfing this way, an “Images” button appears in the Menu
Bar. Clicking on this downloads all images on the page.
If you surf this way with frames, however, the “Images” button only downloads
images in the active frame. Most of the time this will download the images
you want, but if you click and this doesn’t happen, click anywhere in the
frame you want and then click the “Images” button again.
