I started ShopInBerkeley.com one day in August 2000 after trying to order a pizza. I don’t eat cheese, and my wife is allergic to tomatoes. When I called the store, I didn’t have a menu, and it was clear the employee wasn’t too interested in spending a lot of time helping me with my specific dietary needs. I thought, “If only I could find their menu on the web.”

The next day I started ShopInBerkeley.com. I registered the domain name and started the layout for the site.

Who am I?

I am a full time teacher at Berkeley High School. I primarily teach science (Physics and Integrated Science). I am the volunteer manager of the Berkeley High web site. I have also taught an Introduction to the Internet adult school class, and last year I taught a class in Web Design at Berkeley High. I love my job, and don’t want a web business to replace it: I started this business mostly out of desire to assist small businesses gain web presence (and to get my pizza menu).

I graduated from Berkeley High in 1978, and love being back at the school I graduated from. My dad graduated from BHS in 1946, and his mother came here as a refugee from the 1906 SF earthquake, finishing 8th grade at Wittier (now Arts Magnet). While many of my friends have told me that I need to move away from Berkeley to get perspective on the world, I’ve never made it further than Hayward or Martinez.
